A rose by any other name is just as sweet, and no matter what i choose to call my adopted home, the fact remains that this "little big city" has a lot of talent that is being slept on.
Enter LP Tha Heartless Poet.
I've known this cat for about 7 or 8 years now, having attended Ben Davis High School together, and even then I knew he had a thing for lyricism. As his moniker denotes, he started off writing poetry at the age of 10, and continued doing so until a cousin suggested that he spit his poems over music, turning them into rap songs. Before Instrumental Jacking became the norm in the industry, he found himself recording a song over the beat to "Superwoman" by Lil' Mo on one of them boomboxes with the microphone. This is when he said, "Hey, this is actually kinda cool."
An MC was born.
"In two or three months, I'll release my debut project, 1st Round's on Me.", LP told yours truly in a fairly enlightning conversation about him and music in general. Just like that fateful first song, 1st Round will include songs done over popular tracks from the likes of Biggie all the way down to Elle Varner, as well as little known songs and original joints. With confidence in his material and his ability, he states everyone from the hip-hop heads to the trap dudes will find a little bit of themselves in his music and be able to relate.
"I want to touch as many bases as possible to touch as many people as possible, and not just cater to one crowd."-LP
He also plans to release a second project at year's end, called ADHD (Ambition, Determination, Hustle, and Drive).
One thing that I, as a resident and sometimes artist of Naptown can attest to, this city has no lack of those 4 things. We chopped it up about the Indianapolis Rap Scene, and he respectully said about his peers, "To be honest, everybody's trying to follow the same mold." and pointed out some people would pass on collaborating with other artists due to their "not being ON yet" or lowkey hate on each other.
This line of questioning and answering led me to ask, "Well, okay; what makes you someone the people should listen to and support?"
"I'm pushing a more complete product, [ranging from] situations with your girl, your partner just died,...... I'm like an app store, whatever you're going through: I got a song for that."-LP
I asked LP for some final words of wisdom before we had to get off the phone, and he said this for all his fellow artists (or pretty much anyone trying to make it.......
"Be yourself, stay persistent, give people something to look forward to, keep 'em guessing, and if nothing else.....have A.D.H.D.!!!"-LP
